Birmingham Ice claims 15 and under championship
When the Birmingham Ice Orange first jumped onto the grassroots basketball scene with Eric Bledsoe and company, the familiar cheer of “Ice Baaaaaaallllll” could be heard echoing from the stands after a big play or a big win.
Those familiar chants were back at USC Aiken on Sunday when the Birmingham Ice Orange team hoisted the 15 and under championship trophy. Ice ball is back. Not that it ever really left though. It is just a new wave of talent from Alabama.
The young 15 and under crew beat the SC 76ers 73-62 to claim the championship. The path to the title was hard-earned. With a roster full of players that could step into the star role during any game, Birmingham found success from guards Gary Johnson and Que Hall. Together, the two combined for 49 points and pestered the 76ers all game long.
“You have to go hard to win these kinds of tournaments,” Johnson, who scored a game-high 22 points, said. “We just played the way we practice.”
