AUGUSTA, GA — It was a full day of action at the King James Southern Exposure as games went from sun up to way past sun down. What were the top stories from the 17 and under division? We look back on a busy day of action during the live recruiting period.

TOP STORIES

Sometimes you just have to have that swagger. That’s what Heat Check has. A lot of it, actually. Why? How about this – the team is a 15 and under club that wanted a challenge in the live evaluation period and decided to play up in the 17 and under division.

After a hard fought Saturday, the Atlanta-based program is in the Final Four of the KJSE. A Saturday night victory over North Florida Elite was anchored by a strong first half from Kai Lamert and a strong second half from D’marcus Simonds and steady decision making from Christian Turner (pictured above). Garrett Covington was great on the wing, knocking down three-pointers while Obinna Ofodile was blocking shots and playing well at the rim.

Heat Check keeps constant pressure on the ball, frustrating the opposition into turnovers. From there, Heat Check shines in transition. The youngsters are earning respect from the college coaches and opposing teams here at the KJSE. Hard not to like what they are doing.

—

No surprise here: Juwan Evans of the SC Raptors Elite has been fantastic. The class of 2015 point guard is the best passer in the Riverview Park facility. He may just be the best rebounding guard, too.

Showtime Ballers big man Dan Manzi had his best game of the event, scoring 23 points in the nightcap. His legs finally looked like they were under him. Teammate Corey Sanders, however, has been great from start to finish. The class of 2015 guard is easily one of the best guards in the entire field.

QUICK HITTERS

Gabe Devoe Team Heat

Alabama Celtics guard Jinan Nance found his offensive zone on Saturday. The 5-foot-10 guard from Central Park Christian made buckets. Teammates Caleb Provitt (Carver HS) and Rasheed Worrell (Sipsey Valley) both played their way onto recruiter’s radars.

Speaking of Alabama, the Birmingham Ice were paced by UAB commitment Jarvis Calhoun in scoring. The Hewitt Trussville guard was one of the best perimeter scorers in the field this weekend. Carver HS point guard Cedric McGinnis is a guy to watch the rest of the grassroots season. So is 6-foot-7 all-state forward Labarrius Hill.

Division II schools need to put Carolina Thunder players John John Caldwell, Chris Gray and Mason Sanders on their watch list.

Coastal Crew Rebels power forward Freddie McSwain of Liberty County High School was consistent for the squad this weekend. Undersized but effective.

Florida Tarheels power forward Willie Carmichael is only 6-foot-6 but when he leaves the floor, he plays and looks like he’s 6-foot-9. The long-armed big man from Wekiva High School is an interesting player to keep an eye on in 2014.

Georgia Impact White wing Trey Williams from Woodward Academy had some nice moments on Saturday. Solid scorer.

Georgia Tornadoes guard Muhammad Hamilton had a good junior season. On Saturday, he’s showing that he could be off to a good spring grassroots season.

Jacksonville Lee Bulls guard Isaiah Ford scored 28 points against Team United. The 6-foot-3 guard from Trinity Christian Academy was fantastic in that match-up.

Aim High guard Daniel Fowler scored 26 points in an 8 a.m. game then he jumped in the car and headed home for his junior prom at Allatoona (Ga.) High School. The 6-foot-2 guard played well in limited time at the KJSE.

Team Heat forward Roddric Ross, a 6-foot-7 multi-positional wing from East Rutherford HS, showed flashes of intrigue all day Saturday.

Team United guards Isaiah Blackmon, Malik Massey and Trevor Anderson all had moments of great stuff on Saturday. Blackmon is slippery to the rim. Massey scored a game-winner at the buzzer. Anderson shot the lights out. Good trio of class of 2015 guards all playing well in the 17 and under division.

Xpress United big man Phillip Haynes put on a helmet for the first time last season at North Raleigh Christian Academy. Makes sense. The 6-foot-7, 250-pound meat-eater was one of the best big men in the event on Saturday.

ALL EYES ON US

There was a solid crowd of college coaches that came out to see the action on Saturday. Coming from our college coaches desk…

AUGUSTA, GA — The King James Southern Exposure tipped off on a rainy Friday night and college coaches returned to the sidelines and baselines as the live recruiting period opened back up. The coaches were here and the quest to earn a scholarship started for the players. Here’s a quick peek at what happened on opening night.

TOP STORIES

After shining at the Icebreaker two weeks ago here at Riverview Park and a good showing the next week at KnoxVegas, there were a lot of expectations for Showtime Ballers big man Dan Manzi coming into the KJSE.

It was a slow start for Manzi but there was still plenty to see and like. The 6-foot-9, 235-pound native of Rwanda scored 12 points in an easy win over the Carolina Thunder.

Here’s the thing that will jump off the pages to college coaches: The big fella can really pass it. There were several occasions where Manzi passed out of the post to his teammates on the perimeter that led to a three or a successful drive to the basket.

Clemson head coach Brad Brownell and Jacksonville head coach Cliff Warren were the only two head coaches to see Manzi on the first night of the evaluation period. Manzi said he’s heard the most from Jacksonville and Florida Gulf Coast the most this month. Miami, Wake Forest and Georgia are also in play, he said.

–

The class of 2015 is shaping up to be a good class, especially in the point guard department. Put Juwan Evans on the list of guys that will be in the conversation for tops in his class.

Playing with the SC Raptors Elite, Evans piloted his team to a 75-65 over Team United 16U in the night cap. The win was the right kind of start for Evans and company.

“That’s what we needed,” Evans, who led all scored with 18 points, said. “That’s the confidence builder we wanted. It’s a good start.”

Evans is off to a good start this grassroots season. That’s good news for the schools that are hot on his trail. And there are good programs in the hunt. Evans said he has offers from Cincinnati and Clemson while Florida, Memphis and South Carolina are interested, he said.

–

SLEEPER ALERTS

Aim High came to the Peach State Summer Showcase last year as a team with non-descript jerseys and a roster full of players that just wanted to compete. They won the 16 and under division, causing coaches to thumb through the information packet to find information on the club.

The same thing could happen here at the KJSE. This year’s Aim High team has players worth watching. They are balanced.

Ryan Davis of Cartersville (Ga.), Daniel Fowler of Allatoona (Ga.), CJ Jackson of Olympic (N.C.) and Dominic Joseph of Westlake (Ga.) combined for 50 of Aim High’s 66 points in a win over the Xpress United.

Davis, a 6-foot-4 strong-bodied guard, said he’s hearing from Tennessee Tech and Middle Tennessee State while Fowler said he’s heard from Marist, Southern Miss and Mercer.

By the way, Jackson piloted Olympic (out for Charlotte) to a 30-0 record and a state championship. He moved into the school from Macon, Georgia and played his way into a starter’s role.

–

The Smyrna Stars will always have a sleeper (or two) on the roster. This year is no different. Paulding County (Ga.) big man Raasean Davis caught the attention of coaches in his team’s win on opening night. The 6-foot-7 power forward showed some flashes of intrigue in the victory. Keep an eye on him.

QUICK HITTERS

Dwayne Bacon scored 17 points in Showtime Ballers win over the Carolina Thunder. The 2015 stud has enjoyed a monster start to the grassroots season.

Smyrna Stars big man Josh Sallette of Morgan County (Ga.) recently landed a qualifying score in the standardized test, making him an interesting prospect this weekend. The 6-foot-8 center is a late-bloomer that wants to visit schools now, according to his father. His name is being whispered around the building to schools that are still looking for some size in the signing period. He’ll play in an all-star game on Saturday night at nearby Richmond Academy, too.

Thought Team United guard Trevor Anderson was good in defeat, scoring 18 points for his club. Team United is a 16 and under team playing up a division. They’re a tough match-up.

Like speed? Try 5-foot-8 guard Steve Robinson for Xpress United. The mini-man is a jet with the ball and took it upon himself to challenge Aim High in the second half. Good first impression.

Just in case you were wondering, UAB commitment Jarvis Calhoun can really score it. The Birmingham Ice guard made it rain in an opening round win.

SC Raptors Elite guard Gage Ellis played well in his team’s win, being the beneficiary of good passes from Evans. Ellis, a 6-foot-4 guard from Legacy Charter (SC) in the 2015 class, said he is hearing from Appalachian State, Furman, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State and Wofford.

Top players from the 2013 #ICEBREAKER

There were a number of big-timer performances in this year’s #ICEBREAKER and finding five players that stood out amongst the best of the best was not an easy task. There were 20 or so that could have easily found their way to this space. Here are the five that jumped out to Justin Young.

Best producer I saw in the 17U division of the #ICEBREAKER? Deshawn Freeman of the NC Red Storm. Will likely go JUCO. Will likely be a stud.Justin Young

#BeastMode DeShawn Freeman was outstanding for the NC Red Storm. The 2013 PF from Rocky Mount, NC will likely go to junior college. If he can continue to build on his big senior season, the 6-foot-7 big man has a chance to be a major player at a Division I school.lineageofchampions

Red Storm push past Upward Stars 2 advance 2 Sun. games #IcebreakerTy Freeman

Best overall prospect that produced that I saw at the #ICEBREAKER? Tevin Mack. 2015 guard for Carolina Wolves. Fantastic weekend.Justin Young

@carolinawolves I thought Tevin Mack had top 50 national potential. I was still in the national ranking biz, he’d be on my watch list.Justin Young

2015 wing Tevin Mack of the #CarolinaWolves was one of the big surprises of the day. Said UNC Greensboro, Ga State and Nevada have inquired. Kid has big time scoring ability. Very impressive on Saturday.Lineage Of Champions

Match-up problem: Dwayne Bacon (2015/Showtime Ballers FL). No one could guard him at the #ICEBREAKER. Played 17/16 divisions. Killed both.Justin Young

@jboky Dwayne Bacon is doing work in the 16u division of the #icebreaker. He is leading the Showtime Ballers.lineageofchampions

I knew nothing about this 6-9.240 ’14 big man before the #ICEBREAKER. After watching Dan Manzi of National Treasure, I need to know more.Justin Young

National Treasure big man Dan Manzi (2014) caught the attention of talent evaluators on Saturday at the #icebreaker. Big fella did work.Lineage Of Champions

@GameChanger___ 6’7 F ’14 Anthony Moses #SCKings Athletic Long & Productive. Scores/Boards @ high rate Under the radar. Coaches?! #GetLooksJamie Shaw

N. AUGUSTA, S.C. – All Dwayne Bacon wanted to do was find a tissue for his bloody nose. The 2013 Icebreaker 16U championship trophy could wait. After a back-and-forth battle with the Upward Stars, Bacon helped pilot his Showtime Ballers Florida team to a 61-60 win.

Down by as many as 14 points in the second half, Bacon hit back-to-back three-pointers to help spark the surge that allowed the Ballers to battle back into contention. Bacon finished with 25 points in the title game, capping off a great weekend of work in the CSRA.

Bacon, a 6-foot-6 stat-sheet-stuffer, said he drew some inspiration from watching the NCAA tournament.

“I’m looking at Tim Hardaway, Jr. I feel like I can be something like him. I want the ball in my hands as well. I love the ball in my hands,” Bacon said.

The class of 2015 prospect had the ball in his hands when it mattered and he made good things happen when he shot it from deep, much like Hardaway.

Bacon’s teammate Corey Sanders said the battle against Upward Stars wasn’t an easy one. This win was hard-earned.

“It was hard,” Sanders said. “They got up on us pretty good. But we didn’t get down on ourselves. We came out and played good ‘D’. All of the physical play didn’t matter. We came out with that championship.”

The end result of a good weekend of work?

“We have the confidence to go out there and win more championships,” Sanders said.

After starting the weekend with introductions to new teammates and putting on the brand new Under Armour gear, the members of the Carolina Wolves 17 and under team ended the 2013 Icebreaker shaking hands with new friends and talking about what the future holds.

Not bad for a first tournament.

The Wolves beat the NC Red Storm 58-54 to claim the 17 and under division championship at the Icebreaker. The road to the championship was hard fought and trophy was well-earned.

Future South Carolina point guard Marcus Stroman scored 14 points and controlled the pace of the game throughout. Hephzibah (Ga.) wing Tamyrik Fields scored 16 points, to lead the victorious team.

“We just had to get a win,” Stroman said. “We just had to. This builds confidence. I think we learned we can play with anybody.”

Fields said the victory should help set the tone for the rest of the spring period.

“It was pretty hard to win this tournament but we had to work for this. We had to beat some good teams. Every round it got harder and harder,” Fields said.

NC Red Storm was paced by Deshawn Freeman, who scored 20 points. The unsigned senior was the unofficial MVP of the 17 and under division. His non-stop motor and do-anything attitude was the anchor for a very impressive Red Storm team.
